If you don’t receive e-mail spam, you’re probably very lucky because even the pro in computing field receive email spam. Email spam is not harmful for those who understand what spam is but for those thousands who are innocent and fell prey to email spam messages, it proves expensive.

What do you mean by email spam ?

Well. Spam is unsolicited messages (scams, advertisements and cheating offers) sent to masses without their will/desire to receive such messages. When spamming is done through email, it is email spam. Spam are also called junk e-mail or Unsolicited Bulk E-mail (UBE )or Unsolicited Commercial Email (UCE ). Spam is totally waste of time. Reading spam emails and replying to it is another wasteful & disadvantageous process. Spam mails account for such a huge percentage that it may cover around 95 % of emails sent or received.

How to identify whether a particular message is spam or not?

– Spam messages usually contain product advertisements or information about product from a company in which you are not interested nor your were subscribed to such updates. Such product info & services may be misleading and false.

– Spam messages usually contain offers which are fake and catchy enough to entice you especially those people who are new to all these. Such email messages usually contain subjects like

Claim your 1000 $ now.

$ 1000 victoria secret gift card

You have win $ 2500

Manage your diabetes…. – etc. etc.

– Spam messages may contain obscene, p0rn0grafic, seksual or other kind of materials which you don’t want in your inbox particularly.

How do such spam messages reach your email inbox ?

Harvested address spam – The spammers use a computer programs (spider or  spam bots) to search the entire web, every website for email address. The program looks for @ symbol on every website and detect the text preceding this symbol and following this symbol to get email addresses from entire www.

TO find out whether your email address is listed in vulnerable way on any website, just open google.com and write your email address in search box. If google can find it on any page, spam-bots can do the same for sure.

Email Virus Spam – Suppose your friend’s computer is infected with viruses, worms or trojans which steal email contacts and addresses from their address books, then you will receive spam through this. Even the virus spoofs the “from” part of email and the email may appear to seem from another person.

Domain name contact spams – If you own a website, you might have registered it under your name and email address without privacy protection service. Spammers scan whois database to get your email address. Spammers also send spams to generic emails @ your domain. For example- Many website owners most probably would have emails like info@ yourwebsite.com or contact@ yourwebsite.org , etc. These common generic names are also vulnerable to spamming.

What can you do to prevent spam messages from reaching you ?

Anti-Spam Software – Use anti-spam softwares to filter out spam. Free as well as paid softwares are available. One such free software is SpamBayes – Download SpamBayes- Free anti-spam software for all email platforms. Modern Internet Security packages such as KIS etc offers anti-spam feature also.

Use spam-protection enabled email service – Now most of the email service providers provide very advanced spam protection such as gmail, yahoo mail, etc.

Whenever you identify spam in your inbox folder instead of spam folder, mark the message as spam, this way the spam detection technique also improves.

Do not post publicly your email address on any website or forum or blog. If you really feel urgency for public display of your email address. you should write as – myemail at (gmail) dot com – in such formats.

Do not use catch all emails for your domain.- Many webmasters enable catch all email feature for their domain so that anything @ theirdomain.com would reach to a particular email address but this feature is also much-exploited for spamming by spammers. Even I have felt prey to such spamming.

Do not click on any link in any spam mail. Do not even click on unsubscribe link in such spam messages because that unsubscribe link will confirm your email address as valid email address to spammer and instead of unsubscription, you’ll start receiving lots of spam. So just mark any message that you suspect as spam.

There are also websites which sell mailing list to spammers so don’t give your email address on a website which you don’t trust. You can even use temporary email address or Use a particular email address on all websites for registering subscribing or signing purpose.

Use image to display your email address on a public website, blog or forums by using online email signature or email image generator.
